It's hard to write an impression about a country when we spend all our time in Antigua and one night in Guatemala City. But here you go:
1. It seems like there are a lot of natural beauties in the country, like Semuc Champey and Lake Atitlan. Also we missed a lot of Maya culture and old indigenous buildings that we were not able to see like Tikal
2. People were the most polite we have encountered so far. Always smiling and ready to answer any questions you might have
3. Of all the places we’ve seen Guatemala has larger percentage of indigineous peoples who apparently still embrace their culture
4. Weather was really bad. This is the end of raining season and in Antigua was always foggy and we could not see any of the 3 volcanos around the city which height & distance from Antigua
5. Violence seems to be a big problem, especially in Guatemala City. People seem to be scared and they are always letting us know to be careful and to not trust people
6. In Guatemala, we had the best food so far. Yes, we were in Antigua with all those really nice restaurants, but we had food in very small ones and also in the market and the food was great. And on he last day we had a cooking class.
7. The guatemalan currency is called Quetzal and US$ 1 costs around 7.7 Quetzales. Dollar can be accepted as a currency mainly in touristic places like hotels and travel agencies, but not a often as in Nicaragua or Costa Rica. A local beer in a bar costs from US$ 2.1 – 3.2.
